[ Did someone say sword?? All jokes aside, Keith is still trying to get a good feel of the city. If this is meant to be a more permanent state of being, then he intends on spending all of his free time figuring out what the world has to offer.

Emerald Park isn't too far from where he's chosen to live and he passes by it more or less every day. The girl with the katana is new though, and Keith can't help stopping to admire the unusual sword. ]

Is that really made of steel?

[ It looks more like it was carved out of a glacier. With the number of people arund with ice powers, he supposes that wouldn't be so far out of the realm of question. ]

[ Rukia lifts her head upon hearing his question. It's certainly not the first time anyone's asked about her zanpakuto, but it's one of the only times she's been asked about what it's made of. She never thought she'd have to give a human the answer to this question, and, well, she doesn't think she's going to be entirely honest about it. ]

...Ah, something like that.

[ It's made out of souls or something Keith, how would you feel about knowing that -- anyway. She can see why he asked, but that's the answer she's settling on. ]

Do you own a sword as well?

Something like that?

[ Yeah, he's noticed that hedge of an answer, though for now he's not going to press her on it. ]

I do. Is yours meant for combat or is it more ceremonial?

[ Again, the sword just looks a little too pristine and aesthetic to be meant for swinging around on a battlefield. ]

Combat, primarily, even if it may not appear to be so -- and weapon forging is a bit more complicated where I come from.

[ Though it's capable of doing something a little ceremony-like, and her answer isn't wrong, either. At this point, she's not comfortable disclosing her occupation, so she's going to continue to be dodgy. Sorry, Keith. ]

And yours? I'd like to see it, if you have it on you.

Complicated in what way?

[ But he's not trying to be difficult here, so he'll reach behind him to pull out his Marmora knife, which is... you know Not a sword yet because he hasn't chosen to activate it. ]

This is it. [ A beat. ] I'm Keith, by the way.

That's confidential.

[ She says this with a perfectly leveled smile on her face. She'll tell him eventually -- it's mostly just the awkwardness about being a shinigami coupled with being unsure of how he'd take the information that's keeping her from saying anything. Even so, she looks at his knife and blinks a little. ]

Hm. I don't mean to be rude, but this looks more like a knife than a sword. Does it transform?

[ Because she knows a thing or two about transforming weapons, so! ]

And it's nice to meet you, Keith-san. I'm Rukia.

[ OKay, so the mysteriousness is 100% intentional then. Got it. Keith's not exactly going to begrudge anyone for keeping some matters private, but it does make him a lil more guarded about this Rukia person. Who... he guesses is from Japan, then?? Some mystery Japan with mystery sword forging techniques.

Why is the multiverse like this. ]

Just Keith is fine. [ Because guess who doesn't really understand the implications of dropping honorifics? This guy right here. ] It's nice to meet you, Rukia.

And it does, yeah. [ Which he demonstrates for her. The knife emits a brief white glow then turns into a longer blade. For now, he turns the handle of it in his hands to keep the actual blade pointed at the ground. ] Does yours transform as well?

[ Mystery Japan, yeah. That sounds about right. ]

Alright, Keith. [ She'll do her best to remember to drop the '-san' with him! But enough about formalities, there's a transformation going on. The knife turns into a longer blade, and Rukia looks at it with slightly widened eyes. ]

Ah. It has such an interesting shape to it -- how did you get it to transform?

[ As for his question, she looks down at her blade, which is covered in white: ] This is its transformed state. Normally, it looks like a standard katana. I was intending on training with it but decided against it.

[ And as she says that, she wills the zanpakuto to go back to its original state. ]

[ His eyes are on Rukia's sword as it reverts back to a more standard looking katana. He has questions about this, of course, but first he'll answer hers. ]

This knife will transform into a sword for those with Galran heritage. The Galra typically design weapons and technology to activate only when interfacing with a member of the species.

[ All of which gets said rather casually. He has nothing to hide on that front, even if he can already anticipate the follow up question. ]

What's the significance of your sword's transformation?

[ Huh. Is this guy not entirely human, too? Welcome to the squad, Keith. ]

What is a "Galra", exactly?

[ As she asks the question, she starts to sheath her sword. Well, she supposes she can tell him a little about how a zanpakuto works. ]

My sword, known as a zanpakuto, can take on various forms. Mine is named Sode no Shirayuki and utilizes ice for its techniques, hence why it turns white. Not every ice-based zanpakuto has that trait, but its appearance and abilities vary from person to person.
