BACKGROUND
HISTORY: Wiki // More Wiki

PERSONALITY:
  • What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?

  • In early seasons of Voltron, Keith can be most succinctly described as a bullheaded, socially awkward shitchild with a reckless streak and abandonment issues strong enough to generate a gravitational field. In dealing with people in day to day situations, Keith is usually dry, occasionally snarky, and just a little too blunt for his own good. ...And that’s if there isn't a disagreement happening. If he's pissed off, he does not hold back from getting belligerent and in your face to get his point across. In general, Keith tends to come across stand-offish with “lone wolf” vibes in neutral conversation, but can be outright rude and combative when feeling provoked or pressured. This often leaves people with the impression that he prefers to be left alone, however that isn’t necessarily true.

Despite Keith's outward demeanor, it's important to note that he clearly dislikes feeling isolated and being treated with indifference which reveals an interesting contradiction in his behavior. He doesn't like being called a lone wolf by the paladins, and makes strides to have so-called bonding moments with the team. In his heart of hearts, he wants to have connections to other people and wants to carve out a place in the universe that's his. As also shown by his amazement about everyone in the universe being made of "the same space dust." as strong as his drive to keep himself protected may be, there's also a strong desire for solidarity rather than isolation. He wants to understand people, he wants to have meaningful connections with the people around him. This may be hampered a bit by the fact that Keith struggles with bouts of social awkwardness a kneejerk tendency to wall people out when he's vulnerable, but it very genuinely makes him happy when he feels he's established a positive relationship with others.

  • How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?

  • Despite his label as the more temperamental of the paladins of Voltron, Keith is actually extremely level-headed in an emergency. Under situations of intense duress, Keith is able to shut down all distractions and analyze the situation pragmatically. There’s a reason that even early on in Voltron, when Shiro is out of commission, the other paladins naturally turn to him to call the shots in their battles.

However, that’s not to say that Keith’s ability to think pragmatically and rationally is unfailing. Whenever someone important to him (Shiro) is in danger, Keith shows a consistent pattern of becoming tunnel visioned to the point that he drops all other priorities, risking his own life to protect Shiro, even if he has to do it alone.

  • What are your character’s fears? How do they hinder or challenge your character?

  • While Keith was still an infant, his Galra mother left the family in order to keep Earth protected from a hostile alien race. However, his father tells him nothing about her and thus Keith grows up believing she abandoned him before he could even walk or talk. This lingering question of his self worth is only made worse when his dad dies because he chose to go back into a burning building to save peoples' lives. Though Keith says his father was a "real hero" the early loss of both parental figures left him all alone in the world and believing that he can only ever rely on himself. He grows up in a group home, troubled and combative, and was eventually deemed a "disciplinary case" that wasn't worth the time of day.

As a result, Keith grew up internalizing negative ideas about his worth and despite his attempts to prove people wrong about him, often falls into self defeating patterns of self sabotage because he believes nobody will give him a chance anyway. At least in his mind, if his parents could leave him, anyone can. Therefore, out of an unconscious fear of further loss and abandonment, Keith tends to stick to himself and pushes others away before they can get too close.

    POWERS
    SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    1. Half Galra. Keith is half alien (though he is unaware of this at this canon point) and under situations of extreme emotional and physical duress starts showing more Galra traits. These include yellow sclera, slit pupils, and fangs.
    2. Hand-to-Hand combat. Skilled at fist fights, Keith is stronger than he looks and can fairly easily punch people across a room.
    3. Sword skills. His weapon of choice is knives and swords.
    4. Piloting. Whether that's fighter jets, sentient robot lions or hoverbikes, Keith can drive/fly quite a few different vehicles.

NERFING: Just to be on the safe side, Keith's physical strength will be nerfed so that his punches hit hard, but don't necessarily send people flying backwards .
